Wheels Up

And we're off!

Over the next week, we'll be traveling throughout Belize to welcome secondary school students to the wide world of computing and information technology as we learn about Belizean culture and tradition.

Our team of seven undergraduate students and three faculty members from Michigan State University is excited to partner with Pathlight Belize at their regional centers in Orange Walk, Belize City, and Belmopan, where we will be hosting micro:bit workshops and celebrating their students' completion of the Spring 2022 MSU x Pathlight Belize Coding Club, hosted virtually in January and February 2022 with the generous support of ACM SIGSOFT and IEEE TCSE.

Pathlight Belize is an educational charity "empower[ing] children in Belize to receive a quality education, break free from poverty, and reach their God-given potential." ACM SIGSOFT, the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Software Engineering, "provides a forum for computing professionals from industry, government and academia to examine principles, practices, and new research results in software engineering." IEEE TCSE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Technical Community on Software Engineering, "has the duty to advance awareness of software engineering and to support education and training through conferences, workshops, and other professional activities that contribute to the growth and enrichment of software engineering academics and professionals."

In addition to our coding workshops, we'll explore Ambergris Caye, Caves Branch, and Xunantunich; we'll tour the Belize Tropical Education Center; and we'll learn about Belize's sugar industry on a tour of a sugar factory.

We look forward to sharing our adventures, lessons, and photos with you on this blog!
